A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the Community Safety Camper Van going off for a limited refurbishment. Well it’s finally back with us and the contractors, Express Caravans and Motorhomes, have done a great job.
The vehicle is now more of a mobile office than a camper. The toilet and shower area have been removed and rebuilt as a storage and display area. We can now carry and display a variety of crime reduction items that we’re handing out to the public. A TV/DVD combi (complete with digital TV!) will allow us to show crime reduction videos (such as this one on Youtube) or news items. The never-used sink unit, cooker and fridge have been removed and replaced with a desk, complete with two fold-up chairs. Best of all, the internal lights and heater now work – it’s now possible to use the van in all weathers!
This refurbishment, which has been done as economically as possible, will
make the vehicle far more versatile. Walsall Housing Group, who have donated a substantial amount towards the work, will shortly begin using the vehicle in conjunction with the police to address crime and anti-social behaviour in areas where they have housing stocks. Neighbourhood Policing Teams are now booking the vehicle for police surgeries and other events in their areas. If you see the vehicle parked in your area, come aboard and have a talk to us!
The next and final stage in the vehicle’s ‘upgrade’ is a change to the exterior graphics. I’ll let you know once that’s completed.
